Sewing Roman Blinds - Helpful Hints

For a classic tailored window treatment, try sewing flatfold or hobbled roman blinds from a detailed and illustrated pattern or kit. It can be a do-it-yourself project for those with either little or lots of sewing experience. Start by making a complete list of necessary items.

Shop online from stores that offer a wide variety of decorator fabrics - plain colors, sheer neutrals or all over prints work well. Add a lining for insulation and for a professional looking roman blind. Before beginning to sew draw a diagram with accurate and specific measurements.

Use twill tape (made especially for sewing roman blinds) along with the correct number of rings that will be sewn on separately. For a shortcut purchase pre-made tape with a ring every 5". Buy the right size of shade cord by multiplying the length of the strip by 2.3 then dividing by 36". Fusible web makes attaching the liner at the side hems easier. Get a mounting board cut to fit and cover it with the fabric.

Weighted bars are needed for roman window blinds to hang properly. Try wooden dowelling for heavier weight material and aluminum or brass rods with lightweight materials. Inside mounted roman blinds require round head screws while outside mounts need angle irons.
